Having A Moment With: Punjammies (Glamour Jams with a Mission)

18 Feb

Towards the latter half of my recent illness, I really started questioning my wardrobe.

During the actual puking/sleeping/hallucinating/begging God for it to end, I didn’t give a shit about what I was wearing.  I can puke just as easily in a towel, a robe or a ballgown.  I’m talented that way. But as I started to recover I looked down at my outfit-of-choice:  boyfriend’s sweats, tee with a hole in the armpit, paint-stained hoodie.  I almost started barfing again.

I’m not knocking sweats or cheap trashy pajama pants.  I spend a large portion of my weekend life in both.  But wouldn’t it be wonderful to make like a Hepburn and wear super glamorous sleepwear ALL THE TIME?  And wouldn’t it be EVEN BETTER if you could support an awesome organization at the same time?  Because I have got you COVERED.

A friend led me to Punjammies this holiday season.  Punjammies is part of the International Princess Project, which advocates for women enslaved in prostitution. Read all about them here, because they are doing awesome work.  Here’s the story on Punjammies:

Each Punjammie™ is created in an after-care facility for women who have been rescued, released or escaped from a life of forced prostitution. Their lives have been marked by a message – you are a commodity – to be used for other’s gain.

Whether sold by her own family, trafficked from another country or driven by desperation, she was a slave to this life. Each story is as unique as each girl.

When one manages to escaped from this life of horror, she has few options where to turn. Aside from the emotional and psychological trauma, women formerly working as prostitutes cannot easily enter schools, return to family systems or secure jobs to support themselves in India. A high quality after-care center is one of the best options a woman has at rebuilding her life.

Holistic aftercare involves quality medical care, emotional safety, education and the tools to create a new way of life for herself.

Empowering each woman with an opportunity to learn a marketable skill and become a part of a viable business is the purpose of Punjammies™. In providing for her basic need to support herself, she sees that she has value far beyond what the lies have told her. She begins to see her rightful place of value – a princess.

Every Punjammie™ purchase creates
A fair trade wage
Financial support for holistic care
Capacity building for more women to enter the after-care center

Every Punjammies™ tells the story of a girl who was once voiceless. You can be a part of re-building lives shattered by modern day slavery.

Wear Punjammies™. Wear hope

Pretty fantastic, right?  And the pajamas are amazing.  Comfy and cozy and really, really pretty.  I should state for the record that I have no financial stake in Punjammies or anything like that–I just think they’re great and I want to spread the word.

I mean, just look at these!

Having A Moment With: Hairbows

21 Jan

So I’m really into Alice and Wonderland’s style.

Sure, I’m thirty years old but WHATEVER!  I’m gonna do what I want!  And if that means dressing like a literary/cartoon child for the foreseeable future, than so be it! Pinafores and Mary Janes for EVERYONE!

How grownups dress.

How grownups dress.

But most iconic of all is her little black hairbow.  It’s demure and precious in a way that’s not cloying.  I love a sweet black bow with everything from a sundress to  black leather and spikes.  And why stop there?  Add a black bow to a ball gown!  To a swim suit!  WEAR ONE WITH YOUR PAJAMAS!

I mean, headbands are always a good idea.  Blair Waldorf taught us that.  A headband is an awesome way to add a little “piece of flair” to your outfit with zero trouble while taming shitty hair at the same time.  It’s a win-win-win!  But while all headband designs are always a go in my book, there is just something about a bow.  Retro.  Chic.  Playful.  AREN’T THESE WORDS YOU WANT TO DESCRIBE YOU?  Good.  Put a bow on it.

Check out this one and this one from Etsy.  Forever 21 and Claire’s are also great places for cheap-as-shit bow headbands.

Ok.  Maybe you like bows but hate headbands.  Maybe they fall off or hurt your ears or give you headaches.  It’s cool!  Find yourself some bow hairclips!  Etsy is besty for this.  I just bought a Medium Glitter Bow from my friends at Crown and Glory and I love it!  Instead of a band, it’s on a clip.  It’s sturdy and light and cute as a f*cking button.  See for yourself.Hairbow

Or use it to spruce up a bun, like the model from Crown and Glory’s website:

I know.  So adorable.

So add some bows to your life!  Because growing up is for suckers.

Having A Moment With: SERUMS

7 Jan

Gather round for I have news!  I have found a new weapon against the dreaded Winter Skin Beast.  FACE SERUMS.

OH MY GOD, SARAHPHINA (you are probably screaming in all-caps in your brain), ANOTHER FACE PRODUCT?  ISN’T MY MOISTURIZER ENOUGH?  WHY DO I NEED THIS THING TOO?  I know.  I had the same question.  So I took a jaunt over to my friend Google and found out some stuff.  You can click here, here and here for more reading, but the basic run-down is this:

Serums are to be applied after cleansing (and toning, if you use a toner) and before your moisturizer.  Serums are highly concentrated and often contain up to 70% active ingredients (compared to the 5%-15% of moisturizers).  They are made up of tinier molecules designed to penetrate deep into the skin.  Moisturizers, on the other hand, are meant to hydrate the surface of the skin.  Serums are also more of a “specialized” product, with formula’s designed for all different skin types and skin “problems.”  Anti-aging, oily/acne-prone skin, dry skin, dull skin, etc.  They are quite a bit pricier than other skin products (more on that in a mo), but due to their highly concentrated nature you only need to use a teeeeeeensy bit at a time, so they should last awhile.

So after reading all this awesome stuff about serums, I decided to run out and buy myself one.  I went to the drugstore and picked up Eclos Plant Stem Cells Face Serum.  And I dug it.  It went on smoothly and evenly and seemed to brighten my skin.  I dug it, but I wasn’t blown away.  With my dry skin I needed something that packed more of a moisturizing punch.

And then, a miracle happened.

Christmas.

My awesome Mom  got me Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Oil and it’s fantastic.  It’s 100% organic argan oil and it’s amazing.  It gives my face that baby-butt feel I love so much.   I can’t believe how soft it makes my skin.  I didn’t know it was possible for skin to be this soft.  It’s soft like velvet.  Soft like bunny fur.  Soft like whipped cream tastes (mmmmm…whipped cream). It’s definitely for nighttime use, though.  It takes a bit of time to fully absorb into my skin, and I wouldn’t want to apply makeup over it.

Oh sure, I look greasy NOW, but tomorrow I'm going to look like the Goddess of Morning Dew personified. YOU JUST WAIT

Oh sure, I look greasy NOW, but tomorrow I’m going to look like the Goddess of Morning Dew personified. YOU JUST WAIT!

And then, in more exciting serum news,  my SMIL (sorta mother-in-law)(I live with her son but we’re not married)(scandal!) got me the Dermalogica UltraCalming Serum.  It’s lighter than the Josie Maran and is PERFECT for daytime wear.  It’s a great primer for makeup and keeps my skin feeling soft and supple all day.  It really brightens my complexion and reduces redness (which is great for keeping my pink cheeks from turning into LOBSTER FACE).  And as an extra bonus, it smells heavenly.  It has a light and clean lavender scent which somehow manages to be both invigorating and peaceful.  I can’t explain it, you’re going to have to give it a sniff yourself.  But I’m pretty sure that “sense that everything is going to be alright” is listed in the ingredients.  And if it isn’t, it should be.

Ok.  But now we get to the price issue.  Serums are freaking expensive.  Even the drugstore serums are going to run at least $17-$35 bucks.  I know.  It’s a lot and it’s not fair.  I was super lucky to be gifted these amazing products.  But here’s the thing–I will repurchase the Josie Maran AND the Dermalogica with my own funds.  Because they’re great and they’re totally changing my skincare game.  And keep in mind that serums contain a higher percentage of active ingredients than most beauty products and remember that a little bit will go a long way and it might help ease the blow.  If you battle dry skin like yours truly, or are interested in getting a jump start on tackling fine lines and wrinkles, a serum seems the way to go.

Maybe take out a second mortgage on your house?
